What is a Sensory Diet for Autism?

A sensory diet is not about food. It is a carefully designed, personalized schedule of physical activities and accommodations that provide the specific sensory input a neurodivergent child's nervous system needs to stay regulated throughout the day.

Just like your body needs a balanced diet of food to function, a child with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), Autism, or ADHD needs a "balanced diet" of sensory input. If they are under-stimulated, they might seek out input by crashing into furniture or chewing on shirts. If they are over-stimulated, they might avoid input by covering their ears or hiding in tight spaces.

How to Use This Free Sensory Schedule Generator

Our tool takes the guesswork out of occupational therapy. By analyzing your child's unique sensory profile (whether they seek deep pressure, struggle with tactile sensitivity, or need movement), the generator will output a suggested morning, afternoon, and evening routine.

Why Routines Matter

Autistic children thrive on predictability. While implementing a sensory diet, try to offer the same activities at the same times each day. For example, scheduling 10 minutes of "heavy work" (like pushing a laundry basket or jumping on a trampoline) immediately after school can drastically reduce the chances of an after-school restraint collapse.
